Melanie has always had two constants in her life - her love of art and ceramics, and a connection to the United States Army. In 2002 the Army helped put these two constants together when her husband, Sergeant Major Buckler, was stationed in Pittsburg, Kansas as a U.S. Army recruiter. During the next three years Melanie attended Pittsburg State University, located in Pittsburg Kansas, and refined her skills as an artist. She graduated and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2006. Over the next five years Melanie worked at her craft, finally mixing her love for the Army and her love for pottery together. Melanie's goal was to create pottery that could recognize the esprit d'corps for the military units she came into contact with, but be decorative and useful, while still remaining affordable.
Melanie's inspiration for Muddee Paws resulted from working with the clay and her two dogs, Kodee and Charlee, constantly being underfoot. They love to "help out" and between her muddy hands and their muddy paws an idea was created. To symbolize their inspiration a large paw print appears on the bottom of every item created.
